Derrick Rose — went home to Murray Park, the basketball court in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood located two blocks from the house where he grew up. This is the park he practiced, often playing 16 hours a day as he dreamed of being like Mike. Now the 22 yr old All Star League MVP gave back.
"You have some people that look at you different, but I'm still 'Pooh' from the neighborhood to them." he was referring to the dozens of neighbors who lined the fence waving. Rose was back, home to dedicate a $20,000 park make over. New rims, backboards, a concrete court and fresh paint made a difference. Benches were also added to the Derrick Rose Renovation Project. Humble is the word many described Derrick Rose as he asked the neighborhood kids to let his experiences at Murray Park be their inspiration.
"I know I made it. I know that when you look at me you probably don't see yourself making it that far," Rose said. "I'm here to tell you that you can make it this far. Hopefully, when you look at me no matter what you're doing — if you want to be a basketball player, a teacher, no matter what it is — just go out there and dedicate your life to it . . . and you'll be able to get it." |
